IELTS reading test consists of 40 questions. The students have to decode these questions and answer them in 60 minutes. No extra time is allotted to students for transferring their answers to the answer script.

In the Academic IELTS test, students get three reading passages and they are quite lengthy. On the other hand, in the General IELTS test, there are four reading passages and they are very short and easy.

Different types of questions are asked in the reading test of the IELTS exam such as:

  • True or false questions
  • Completion type questions
  • Matching type questions
  • Multiple-choice questions

True/False

  • These are types of questions in which students have to mark the statement as true/false or not given. The trick to handling these questions is that if you have lots of synonyms in the reading passage that are related to your statement then you must mark the statement as true.

Completion Type

  • To tackle completion-type questions students must focus on finding the missing part or piece of the puzzle. However, make you keep in mind the word limit while answering these questions. There are mainly seven sub-categories of this category:

Fill ups: To answer these types of questions students have to find the right words for filling in the blanks. The key trick to answering these questions is to understand the statement and then locate its synonyms in the passage.

Short answer type: To answer these questions students must use one or two words.

Summary Completion: This question type requires students to complete the summary of a paragraph that is present in the passage. The summary completion question is from one or two paragraphs. You don’t have to write a summary of the complete passage. Once you find the first sentence of the para answering the question becomes a kid’s play.

Diagram Completion: These are the types of questions in which students have to complete a pictorial representation. To tackle this question, study the passage carefully and examine the terminology of the diagram.

Flow chart: These questions are very easy to answer. This is mainly because step-by-step instructions are given to students in the passage. All you have to do is just find the first step of the flow chart in the passage and you can complete the flow chart easily.

Table completion: In a table type question students need to fill in the missing content of the table by reading the passage.

Matching Type

  • Matching type questions consist of two sets of data/information and students have to match them by referring to the passage. There are mainly three sub-categories of this category:

Matching Headings to paragraph: These questions require the student to select a heading from the list of headings and place it near the related paragraph.

Matching paragraph information: These questions require students to select a question from the list of questions and match it with the paragraph that contains similar information.

Matching the sentence endings: These questions require you to complete a statement by matching it to an ideal ending.

Multiple-Choice Questions

  • These are the questions that come with 3 or 4 options. The students must select the right option that answers the question after going through the passage. These questions are usually very easy to answer. But make sure carefully go through the passage so you don’t end up selecting the wrong answer.

Handholding by an expert trainer

  • During the IELTS sessions for the reading test, you will learn about the reading test in detail. Moreover, you will become familiar with tips for cracking different types of questing in the exam. At the beginning of training, students will be taught about different questions in the reading test. After the initial phase, students will have to practice cracking different types of questions in the reading test. Regular mock tests will also be conducted to check the progress of students.

In the listening test of both the General and Academic IELTS exam, there are 40 questions. The test is divided into 4 parts and each part contains 10 questions. The duration of the test (listening test) is 30 minutes. However, 10 extra minutes are also given to students for transferring their answers to their answer script.

During the listening test, the audio file is played once. After that, students have to write answers on their question papers. It is good practice to write your answers first on question paper rather than writing them directly on the answer sheet.

What Can You Expect in the Listening Section?

Section 1: Section 1 of the listening test is usually a conversation/chat between two individuals or people. For example, a conversation about booking accommodation, placing an order, etc.

Section 2: it is usually a speech/monologue by one person. The speech is set in a day-to-day social context. For example, a speech regarding student services in a university

Section 3: This section involves a conversation among four persons. For example, a conversation between a faculty and his students regarding an assignment.

Section 4: This section includes another monologue or speech. For example, a lecture or speech of general academic interest.

Types or sorts of questions in the IELTS listening test:

  • Short answer type
  • Sentence completion
  • Form, note completion
  • Multiple choice
  • Matching type
  • Map completion
  • Form completion

Sentence Completion

  • These types of questions require students to read a list of sentences that summarize the idea of the recording. After that, students listen to the recording to discover and fill in the gaps. The word limit of these types of questions is generally one word or a number. To answer this type of question students must possess the ability to find the key idea of the listening text.

Multiple-choice Questions

MCQ questions are the most popular type of questions in the IELTS listening test. To tackle these questions, you have to thoroughly go through the question and try to find its focus area. Most students struggle to solve these types of questions. Thus, you must practice a lot and follow the right strategy to answer these types of questions. To tackle these questions, look for the words of the question in the audio and then select the option which most appropriately answers the question. Mainly there are two types of multiple-choice questions:

Multiple choice single answer: In this type of question, you have to select a single answer from the options.

Multiple choice multiple answers: In this type of question, you have to select multiple answers from the options.

In the IELTS test mainly there are two writing tasks. The writing exam is of the duration of 1 hour. Students get 20 min for completing writing task 1 and 40 min for completing writing task 2. Writing task 1 of Academic IELTS is very different from writing task 1 of the General IELTS test.

In task 1 of Academic IELTS, students have to write a report within the word limit of 150-180 words. On the other hand, in task 1 of General IELTS students have to write a letter within the word limit of 150-180 words.

Task 2 of both Academic IELTS and General IELTS is similar. In task 2 students have to write an essay within the word limit of 250-300 words.

There are various types of questions in task 2 such as:

  • Agree and disagree
  • Agree or disagree to a certain extent
  • Advantages and disadvantages
  • Do advantages exceed the disadvantages?
  • Causes and solutions
  • Double question type
  • Discussion type

Every question type must be handled differently. You will learn about handling various types of questions in task 2 thoroughly in the IELTS training.

The IELTS speaking test is mainly conducted four or five days before the other three tests. It mainly depends upon the availability of slots for the test. The duration of the speaking test is 15-20 minutes max.

The IELTS speaking test can be divided into three parts namely:

  • Part 1 (Interview round)
  • Part 2 (Cue card round)
  • Part 3 (Follow up round)

Interview Round

The interview round mainly consists of one-on-one questions. During this round, you will be asked 5-6 questions regarding your hometown, hobbies, music preference, etc. Students must answer these questions in short as the duration of the round is just 4-5 minutes.

Cue card round

The cue card round is a very important part of the speaking test. In this round, you will get a random topic on which you have to speak for at least two minutes. For preparation, students get 1 minute and after that, they have to speak on their topic for two minutes. The main thing that you must do to clear this test is to be fluent while speaking. Besides this, describe your topic in as much detail and as clearly as possible. You can also use bullet points for presenting your answer more effectively. Apart from this, make sure you cover all the bullet points given in the questions. The bullet points will help you in strengthening the fluency of the monologue.

Sample Cue Card

  • Tell me about the puzzle you solved
  • What kind of puzzle have you solved?
  • How much time did it take to solve the puzzle?
  • Whether the puzzle was easy or difficult?
  • How do you feel after solving it?

Follow up round

In the follow-up round, you will answer 10-12 questions relating to your cue card topic. Students have to answer these questions in a generalized manner and in as short as possible. The answers must be specific and crisp. Besides this, students must try to avoid taking any side or moving to a gender-specific discussion.

Sample questions for the Follow up round

  • Why do parents encourage students to play with puzzles?
  • What kind of puzzles should you play to improve your intelligence?
  • Why do people find detective stories very attractive?
  • Which of these is a better option watching a detective movie or reading an original novel?
