Types of Degrees to Study in Netherlands

Types of Degrees Description
Bachelor’s Degree A bachelor’s degree program in Netherlands requires 3 years of study and it consists of 180 credits. Depending upon the discipline the candidate can receive a BA or BSc degree. A bachelor’s program offered by universities of applied sciences requires 4 years of study that consists of 240 credits.
Master’s Degree A master’s degree in Netherlands requires 1,2 or 3 years of study that consists of 60-180 credits. Candidates after pursuing a Master’s degree will obtain an MA or MSc degree. A Master’s degree in applied Sciences and arts would require the candidate to complete 60-120 credits.
PhD Degree Research universities are the only institutions that can offer PhD degrees in Netherlands. There is very little course work in PhD programs of Netherlands as students have to begin their research work from the first day. Working under supervisors students tend to develop their own ideas while doing research.

  • International students after graduation can spend a period of up to 12 months (search year) to find a job as a highly skilled migrant
  • With a residence permit for the ‘search year’, you can take up any paid or unpaid employment without work permit from your employer
  • At the end of the ‘search year’ period, residence permit cannot be extended.
  • If you get a job, employer will assist you in applying for ‘change of purpose’; if not, you will have to leave the country
  • Can intern with a Dutch company without a separate residence permit or work permit for this purpose. Employer must be able to submit an internship agreement on request
